The Kicukiro Local Court has ordered that Uworizagwira Florien, better known as Yampano, be remanded in custody for 30 days. Yampano was arrested on May 16, 2026.
He was charged with crimes including assault and battery, making threats, damaging property, drug possession, criminal trespass to murder, and unlawful confinement.
When the court decided to detain him for 30 days on June 9, it found that three of the crimes were sufficiently serious. These crimes were vandalism, assault and battery, and smoking marijuana. As a result, he was placed under temporary detention.
For the charges of unlawful confinement, criminal trespass to murder, and the crime of using threats, the court found that there was no compelling reason or sufficient evidence. Therefore, he will not be prosecuted further in these interim decisions.
During the hearing on June 2, 2026, the Prosecution had requested that the defendant be detained for 30 days. The Prosecution stated that there was evidence that required the defendant to be detained so that the courts could continue their investigation.
At that time, Yampano had appeared in court explaining how all the crimes he was charged with had unfolded. He admitted to some of them. He said that he and his wife had discussed them and that his wife had forgiven him. He requested that it be upheld and he be allowed to stand trial without detention for 30 days.
The court dismissed the woman's apology and all other explanations given by Yampano. It ruled that he will face the actual trial while detained in Nyarugenge Prison. This shows that the court prioritized evidence and the law over the arguments of the parties.
